VNG Preparation

The vestibular system is altered by certain medications, caffeine, and alcoholic beverages. In order to obtain an accurate measurement of your balance system, it is important for you to follow these instructions: 

  • Please DO NOT take the following medications for 48 hours prior to the time of your test*:
      • Anti-nausea medications (Dramamine, Compazine, Bonine, Marezine, etc.).
      • Anti-vertigo medications (Antivert, Meclizine, etc.).
      • Tranquilizers (Valium, Librium, etc.).
      • Sedatives (sleeping pills, etc.).
      • Narcotics and barbiturates (Phenobarbital, Codeine, Benadryl, over-the-counter cold remedies, etc.). 
  • Please continue all other medications as prescribed. 
  • Discontinue alcohol and caffeine consumption at least 24 hours prior to the test.
  • Please DO NOT wear any eye makeup/mascara. If you wear contact lenses, bring your glasses, or your contact case and solution with you.
  • Please refrain from eating 3 hours prior to your test. You may have a light snack if necessary. 

*Do not discontinue any medications without first consulting your physician.

 

If you forget and take any of the above medications or drink alcohol, please call the office as soon as possible. Most likely it will be necessary to reschedule your appointment 

The test will take approximately 60-90 minutes, so please be on time for your appointment. We do not require you to have a driver, but it is recommended as some people are more sensitive than others to this test.
