Electronystagmography (ENG)

ENG is a diagnostic test that records involuntary movements of the eye caused by a condition known as nystagmus. It is normal for patients to feel dizzy during this procedure. Electrodes are placed on the forehead and next to each eye. The ENG battery consists of three parts:

  1. Ocular evaluation
  2. Positional Testing
  3. Caloric Stimulation of the Vestibular System

ENG testing can be used to diagnose the causes of vertigo, dizziness, or balance dysfunction by testing the vestibular system.

Prior to the appointment, patients are given detailed instructions to follow in preparation for the test. If you are scheduled for an ENG, please review these instructions at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
